Kava is a vital part of ancient and modern Polynesian culture, a plant that traveled with natives on their many voyages across the Pacific.
WHAT IS KAVA?
Kava is a traditional Polynesian root beverage made from the root of the kava plant (Piper methysticum). It is related to the pepper plant, yes, like black pepper. Traditionally it was used ceremonially in weddings, political meetings and spiritual practices. In some parts of the Pacific, it was also consumed recreationally at social gatherings.
An easy way to relate it to our lives today is; kava was used similarly to wine in Sacrament, champagne at a wedding, or having a couple drinks after work or on the weekends. It has mild sedative, anesthetic and euphoric effects.
The taste varies between the species and whether it is made from fresh or powdered root. People often describe it as tasting like cucumber water, potato peels, black pepper and earth.
We believe kava is only as good as the intention put into it.
WHERE DOES KAVA COME FROM?
Kava is said to originate in Vanuatu or Papua New Guinea and continued to spread East over thousands of years of voyages. As voyagers would pack their canoes for a journey, they would include all they would need to settle in a new place. One of the essential plants that came with them through their journeys was the kava plant. Over time the plants evolved in their different climates and therefore kava species from across the Pacific have slightly different properties and flavors.
